Gary Raymond Berardino Sr.
Gary Raymond Berardino Sr., who lived in Rockaway most of his life, died May 26. He was 54.
Berardino, a handyman, was born in Far Rockaway on July 20, 1951. For the last 15 years, he lived in Florida and Rockaway.
Berardino was preceded in death by his parents; ex-wife, Pauline Drinakle; and sisters, Mary Berardino and Joanne Gammon.
He is survived by his brothers, Gerard, Ronald and Steven; sister, Linda Berardino; children, Craig, Dawn, Gary Jr., Eric, Nicholas, Samantha, Tammy, Adam and Meghan; grandchildren, C.J., Jade, Carmine, Robert, Briana, Bianca, Spanky, Anthony, Giovanni, Lelaine, Savannah, Nicholas Jr., Cameron, Michael, Lucas and Nikko; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is being held at St. Mary's Star of the Sea in Far Rockaway on Wednesday, June 14 at 9:30 a.m. Funeral arrangements were kept private.
Real Estate Broker
Eleanor Haggerty, a Rockaway resident for 15 years coming from Brooklyn, died June 7.
Haggerty, who was born in Brooklyn, was a real estate broker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Haggerty and brother, Rocco Maricondo.
Haggerty is survived by her son, James Gale (Dottie); sister, Joan Ann King; and grandchildren, James and Daniel Gale.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Friday, June 9 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis de Sales on Saturday, June 10 at 9:45 a.m.
Tonia Davina Joseph
Tonia Davina Joseph, a Rockaway resident for more than 10 years, died May 27. She was 42.
Joseph, who was born in London, England in 1963, worked as a consultant.
Joseph was preceded in death by her mother, Amelia Joseph.
She is survived by her daughter, Xenia; father, Lloyd Joseph; aunts, Judith and Diane; uncles, Micahel, James H., James B., Roy, Morris and Randy; sisters, Shelly and LaTanya; brother, Marcel; and other family members and friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with visitation at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Disposition was at Fresh Pond Crematory in Middle Village.
Walter T. Lehmann
Walter T. Lehmann, a Rockaway Beach resident for 80 years, died June 7. He was 93.
Lehmann, who was born in Rockaway Beach, served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He later joined the New York City Fire Department and was assigned to Ladder 134 in Far Rockaway. He reached the rank of lieutenant.
Lehmann was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima Church, and was a member of the Married Men's Club of the Daniel M. O'Connell Post 272 of the American Legion.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Moloney's Lake Funeral Home in Lake Ronkonkoma. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at The Church of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Lake Ronkonkoma. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery.
Stephanie Patrice Orr
Twenty-Four Years Old
Stephanie Patrice Orr, a Rockaway resident for two years, died May 23. She was 24.
Orr was born in Brooklyn on March 10, 1982.
She is survived by her parents, Patrice and Mackey Orr; sister, Lorraine; brothers, Michael and Brandon; and other family members and friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with visitation at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Forest Green Park Cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey.
Retired Telephone Operator
Josephine Powell, a long time Rockaway resident, died June 3.
Powell, who was born in Brooklyn, was a retired Verizon telephone operator.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald B. Powell.
Powell is survived by her son, Donald J. Powell; grandchildren, Janet M., Donald, Jennifer and Jaclyn; and great-grandchild, Ryan.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis de Sales. Interment was at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village.
Mary Ann Singletary
Mary Ann Singletary, a Rockaway resident for 30 years, died May 28. She was 84.
Singletary, who was born in St. George, South Carolina on October 17, 1911, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Far Rockaway.
She was preceded in death by her son, John and granddaughter, Deborah.
Singletary is survived by her sisters, Martha, Irene Carrie and Thelma; brother-in-law, Reginald; and other family members and friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. Visitation was held at the First Baptist Church. Interment was at Amityville Cemetery.
John R. Strofield
John R. Strofield, a Rockaway resident for over 40 years, died June 1 at St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway. He was 79.
Strofield served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines and later worked for the Department of Marine and Aviation as a deck hand on the Staten Island Ferry. He was a former member of American Legion Post 272.
Strofield is survived by his son, Richard Strofield; daughters, Catherine Pryor and Roberta Hanley; grandsons, Erich McCartney, Christopher and Kenneth Pryor.
In honor of Strofield's wishes, his cremains will be scattered by his son, Richard, in the Atlantic Ocean, where his family said he felt most at peace.
