On Memorial Day, Stan's Pepper Steppers, winners of hundreds of state, national and international Double Dutch titles, were demonstrating their Double Dutch skills at the Seaside Flea Market.

It was an effort to raise the money they need to make the trip to the American Double Dutch League World Invitational Championships in Sumter, South Carolina this month.

"We're $3,000 short for the bus fare," said Stan Brown, founder of the Pepper Steppers, who told The Wave they would need to receive the money by June 10. Brown explained their usual sponsors' contributions to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort left the Pepper Steppers without backing for this year's trip.

The group qualified for the upcoming tournament when they won the overall singles and doubles competition at the American Double Dutch League City/State Championships on April 29. In the last few years, Stan's Pepper Steppers came home winners from the world championships in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

This year's competition will be held on June 15 to June 17. If you would like to help contact Joyce Robinson of the Parent's of Stan's Pepper Steppers at 718 868-3166.
