Two Memorial Day Parades Set For Weekend
This is the weekend that we honor those heroes who gave their lives to preserve our freedom as well as those who continue to fight in foreign lands. As is traditional, there will be two parades this weekend. On Sunday, May 28, the Broad Channel Parade, sponsored by both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will step off from the parking lot on the east side of 21 Road and Cross Bay Boulevard at noon. The main ceremony will take place at the George Rieckers Memorial on 6 Road. The Rockaway parade will begin on Monday, May 29, with a 10:30 a.m. mass at St. Francis de Sales Church on Beach 129 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. After the mass, there will be a short ceremony at the "Four Chaplains" memorial at the church and then the parade will step off at 11:45, pausing at the Memorial Circle at Beach 121 Street at approximately noon. before moving on to the main ceremony at the Doughboy Memorial at Beach 94 Street. This year's parade grand marshal is Rockaway resident Peter Hayden, Chief of the New York City Fire Department who, after 36 years of service, will be retiring as the highest uniformed official in the department.
