Seahorses Upend Dolphins To Make Soccer Playoffs

By Elio Velez

When is a .500 season for any team considered successful? When it's the case of the Far Rockaway Lady Seahorses soccer squad, it's a huge achievement. After winning the PSAL Queens II B title in 2005, the team lost ten players due to graduation and or transfers. A season of uncertainty may have awaited the Seahorses but with a new cast of characters and returning players, they shook off the doubt and adopted confidence as their mantra.

In the second meeting with Beach Channel this season, the Lady Seahorses went on the attack with speed and precision, and their 3-1 victory assured them a playoff berth to the playoffs starting next week.

"I never expected to be this far in the rankings. I never expected us to do this well because I thought it was going to be a rebuilding year," said a smiling William Neylon, head coach of the Seahorses. "But surprisingly I got dealt a nice poker hand and a few aces were dealt in my favor."

Neylon says that returning players such as Fayon Malcolm, goalkeeper Shickon Asfall have mixed well with newcomers like Gayle and Flores to become an effective and hardworking team. A nice cross pass from the left wing by Fayon Malcolm found its way to forward Zulma Flores, who ran past two Beach Channel defenders and footed the ball past goalkeeper Tsashai Clarke for a 1-0 lead.

Malcolm made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when a turnover in the Beach Channel defense gave her a chance to gain possession. Clarke looked unsure on whether to run out from her position in the goalkeeper area and the slight hesitation gave Malcolm the opportunity to kick the ball past the goalkeeper. Beach Channel would score in the 31st minute as forward Antoneka Trought took advantage of a failed Seahorses clearance and slid the ball in the right corner past goalkeeper Shickon Asfall.

Any hope of a Dolphins comeback was ended in the second half. Alesia Gayle, who Neylon says was a key in their playoff push, stepped up to take 30 yard free kick. Curving the ball with her right foot, it would sail over the head of a leaping Clarke for a 3-1 lead.

Beach Channel fell to 5-4 with 2 ties and with one game left at presstime against Campus Magnet, they will be assured of a second straight playoff appearance. The playoffs will begin on May 30.

B&G Eliminates BCHS

Boys and Girls once again put on a damper on the Beach Channel girls' tennis team's title hopes with a 3 sets to 2 victory in the PSAL B semifinal at Queens College on May 12. The Dolphins were eliminated by Boys and Girls in the playoffs in consecutive seasons.

Football Change AT FRHS

Another coaching change is in order at Far Rockaway, school that has seen a host of moves within the sports and academic programs the last two years.

Walter Wilkerson, who was the Far Rockaway junior varsity football coach for two seasons, assumed the head varsity job, replacing Anthony Miele in mid-April.
