Plover Day To Be Celebrated On May 29

To celebrate the Rockaway peninsula's protected bird species, Plover Day, sponsored by the New York City Parks Department, will be celebrated on Monday, May 29 from 2-5 p.m. on Beach 58 Street on the boardwalk. Face painting, "critter crafts," educational presentations and beach ecology, games, and bird watching will be part of the festivities.

The piping plover, a small, stocky, sandy-colored bird, became a protected species under the Endangered Species Act in 1986. They live and nest along the Atlantic Coast, particularly in designated areas along Rockaway's shoreline.
