Spot light On ...

Along the northern coast of Tuscany lies the city of Pietrasanta where the marble quarries that once attracted Michelangelo continue to draw artists from around the world. One of those artists is photographer, sculptor and painter Christina Jorge. Drawn to the beauty of their color and design, Jorge photographed the chairs of a favorite Tuscan beach, on a day off from sculpting. The images you see on this page are among those in Jorge's first solo exhibition, Lines in the Sand: The Chairs of Bagno Maria - Marina di Pietrasanta. The show is to be presented at the Rockaway Artists Alliance sTudio 6 Gallery, Fort Tilden from June 4 through June 25. The opening reception is Sunday, June 11, 1-3 p.m. For information: 718 474-0861.

In her artist statement for the exhibit Jorge writes, "My annual retreat to this region of Italy began several years ago. Facing the reality that I was losing my sister to cancer I sought solace through my art. Unable to mold my sister's fate, I found comfort in sculpting, and in molding clay."

Jorge's sculptures and photographs have appeared in group exhibitions nationwide.

Christina Jorge was Vice President and Education Director of the Rockaway Artists Alliance, bringing in close to one million dollars for arts-based programming in the Rockaways. She is the founder of the highly respected kidsmART program and the from the heART art therapy program.

This exhibition is dedicated to Chris Jorge's best friend, her sister, Norma Jean.
