There is a wonderful organization called Safe Horizon and at their 11th annual Champion Award fund raiser/ luncheon at the 69th Armory, Morgan Ramses, a survivor of Domestic Violence, received her Liz Claiborne Award. It was so moving and heartwarming to listen to the victims speak about their tragic lives, but, oh, so gratifying to know these victims can now get the help they need through Safe Horizon. Years ago, many spousal abuse victims had nowhere to turn. If the abuser was someone in the law enforcement field and the cops were called, as soon as the badge was shone, the cops walked away and did nothing for the victim. Years ago in divorce cases, physical violence was never mentioned because it didn't mean a thing. The court was not concerned with that. But, there definitely should be a law on the books, when an abuser is found to be in need of medical treatment, withdrawal of visitation rights should be mandatory until his or her treatment is concluded and the abuser declared stable and safe to be around. Children have been brain washed, manipulated and evilly influenced against the abused party so that the abused party is again abused, but now, by the children she bore. It is a vicious cycle. And, the only way to put a stop to this is through the law and the help and counseling of Safe Horizon.
Safe Horizon responds to more than 150,000 Domestic Violence calls and provides 24-hour service; respond time is 13 seconds. The crime victim hotline responds to more than 35,000 calls. Their child advocacy Centers investigate more than 2,000 cases of child sexual and physical abuse.
Safe Horizon saves lives, restores victims and pursues justice. It provides a way to turn our outrage and grief into compassion and action.
If you overhear or suspect a child is in trouble get on their hot line. If you suspect spousal abuse of a verbal and physical nature call their hot line at 1-800-621-4673 (Hope).
The only thing I did not hear addressed was parent abuse; Mom Abuse. Many a Mom faces that because, "When you have children by an abusive man you are more than likely to have abusive children." Work needs to be done in these fields by courts of law, as referred to above, along with counseling members of families.
But good work is being done, progress is being made and love and understanding are replacing the evils of physical, verbal and emotional abuse. A better world for all of us. And I quote the closing of the Lord's Prayer, "Deliver us from evil."
Helene Danzilo spent a few days in the hospital for heart failure. She is still in Las Vegas with her husband, Peter. However, she was discharged from the hospital on Mother's Day in time to see her daughter, Christine, who came from California to assist Mom. Helene and Peter will be back home in Breezy on May 25. Our prayers are with you, Helene. "Look Ma no Ears" is a fantastic Off Broadway Musical starring multi-talented Lindsey Alley. Some of you may have remembered Lindsey as one of the TV Mouseketeers on Disney Channel's All New Mickey Mouse Club; she was also Annie in Little Orphan Annie. Her credits go on and on. So good, so talented. The book was written by Stephen Winer and Lindsey Alley, with music and lyrics by Bob Stein. Loved every minute of this musical; Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Sundays at 3 p.m. and Tuesdays at 7 p.m. till June 6. It is playing at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, a cafe style place underneath another restaurant at 407 East 42 Street. I highly recommend it. You will have a great time!
Did you know Germany was chosen the most popular destination for meetings and conventions in Europe? The focus of many of Germany's exhibitors at the upcoming IMEX (May 30 to June) will be on Soccer. The FIFA World Cup is taking place June 9 to July 9, and there are still rooms available. But don't wait too long to book. More info on line at www.imex-frankfurt.com.
Something different, I just got off the World Yacht dinner cruise and had a wonderful time. You can marvel at the New York skyline while cocktailing, dinning and dancing. It is a great way to spend an evening of afternoon or attend a wedding or party of any sort. Their special cocktails are good, the music is infectious, the chef on board does a tasty job on the meals and presentation of each course and the service is pleasant, efficient and gracious. The World Yacht takes you around New York in an enjoyable three hours. What more could you want? And, it is different.
