Walter Akins Worked In Real Estate

Walter Akins, a Rockaway resident for 10 years, died April 20. He was 71.

Akins, who worked in real estate, was born on November 9, 1934 in Cairo, Georgia.

Akins is survived by his wife, Margret (Diana) Akins; daughter, Cynthia; sons, Wallace and Philip; sister, Mildred Woodard (Matthew); brother, Bobby Akins; Uncle, Jewel Akins (Isabelle); grandchildren, D.J., Courtney and Diamond; two brothers-in-law, Robert Daniel (Annette) and James "Jim" Daniel (Florence); and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with visitation at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Trinity of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hewlett, New York.

Walter J. Boland

Retired NYPD Sergeant

Walter J. Boland, a former Rockaway resident, died April 28. He was 80.

Boland, a retired NYPD sergeant who worked in the department for 30 years, including service in both the 100 and 101 Precincts, was born on October 1, 1925 in Rockaway Beach. He was raised in Rockaway Beach and moved to Far Rockaway, where he lived until moving to upstate New York in 1982. Boland served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was also a member of the American Legion; a lifelong member of Holy Name Society; and a communicant at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham, New York.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick J. Boland and Mary Boland (nee McPolin); and brothers, John and Vincent.

Boland is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia; six children, Eileen Waldman (Don), Caryn Strining (Charlie), Tina Neilsen (Jeff), Peter Boland (Irene), Claire Palmer (David), and Terence Boland (Dawn); and 12 grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham, New York. Interment was at Potter Hollow Cemetery in Potter Hollow, New York.

Evangeline Maria Boone

IRS Office Of Chief Counsel

Evangeline Maria Boone, a Rockaway resident for five years, died May 2. She was 63.

Boone, an employee of the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, was born on July 17, 1942 in Brooklyn. She was a member of St. Johns Baptist Church in Inwood, under Reverend Gregory K. Stanislaus, Pastor.

She is survived by her parents, Elizabeth and Kenneth Taylor; husband, Arthur Lee Boone; children, Andre L. Boone, Cynthia D. Boone and Tina R. Boone; daughter-in-law, Nicole Boone; grandchildren, JerVaughn Bratton and Andre L. Boone, Jr.; siblings, Kenneth V. Taylor, Jr. (Roz), Adelaide V. Morton, Wayman R. Taylor, Michael A. Taylor, and Nathaniel G. Taylor; and many other relatives and friends.

Barbara J. Bruder

Barbara J. Bruder, a Rockaway resident for over 60 years coming from Brooklyn, died May 4.

Bruder, a real estate broker, was born in Brooklyn. She was a Charter Member and early President of Breezy Point Garden Club. Bruder was also a member of the Breezy Point Golden Age Club.

She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Bruder; and brother, Edward P. Scott.

Bruder is survived by her husband, Donald J. Bruder; sons, Paul A. (Esilda) and Kurt M.; daughter, Jeanne Marie; and grandchildren, Andrew C. and Emily E.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Edmund's in Breezy Point. A private cremation was held on May 5 at Long Island Cremation Co. in West Babylon, New York.

Gwenneth Burgher

Gwenneth Burgher, a Rockaway resident for ten years, died April 23. She was 72.

Burgher was born on April 11, 1934 in Venture-St. John, Barbados.

She is survived by her daughter, Carmeta Clarke; grandchildren, Hyacinth Grannum and Roland Clarke; great-grandchildren, Aziah, Tamyrah and Moriah; grands in-law, Sean Grannum and Stormie Clarke; only surviving aunt, Ermenia Riley; brothers, Arnold, Edgar, Grantly, Decosta, Duffriend and Dunlop; sisters, Moreen and Vern; nieces, Margaret, Merdelle and Christine; nephews, Glenroy, Stanfield and Geofrey; and many other relatives and friends.

Agnes Dorothy Burns

Agnes Dorothy (nee Lang) Burns, a Rockaway resident for 13 years coming from Glendale, Queens and Rocky Point, died May 9.

Burns, a homemaker, was born in Brooklyn. She was a faithful parishioner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Burns Sr; and brother, William Lang.

Burns is survived by her children, Thomas E. Burns Jr. (Mary); Lisbeth Collins, and James W. Burns (Laurie); 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 12, 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 13 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More in Rockaway Point. Interment will be held at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, New York.

Jessica Duncan

Jessica Duncan, a Rockaway resident for five years, died April 21. She was 55.

Duncan, a home attendant, was born on February 15, 1951 in Dallas County, Alabama.

She is survived by her children, Veronica Duncan, Starlett Michelle Gittens and Aaron Vanbergh Duncan; son-in-law, Andy Gittens; sisters, Ruby McDonald and Mittie Duncan of New York, Claudia Jackson, Emma Duncan and Joann Styles of Detroit, Michigan; brothers, Turner Duncan, Freddie Duncan, Aaron Duncan of Detroit, Michigan, and Henry Duncan of Binghamton, Alabama; three grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Joseph Emmanuel Forbes, a Rockaway resident for 23 years, died April 27. He was 23.

Forbes was born on January 31, 1983 in Far Rockaway.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Maureen Forbes.

Forbes is survived by his father, George; five sisters, Novelette, Maxine, Sharon, Marlene and Tamar; five brothers, David, Marshall, Lance, Travis and Richard; twenty-two nieces and nephews; five uncles; four aunts; and many relatives and friends.

Marie Graves, a Rockaway resident for over five years, died April 25. She was 33.

Graves was born on October 26, 1972 in Lambeth, England.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Joseph.

Averil Pearl McLeod, a Rockaway resident for two years, died April 24. She was 94.

McLeod, a fashion designer, was born on August 9, 1911 in Clarendon, Jamaica, West Indies.

She was preceded in death by her husband, brother, sisters, niece and nephews.

McLeod is survived by her son, Dudley of Jamaica, West Indies; three grandchildren, Audrey Murdock, Eric McLeod of New York and Anthony Jr. of Jamaica, West Indies; two great-grandchildren, Sean and Rashaun of New York; five nieces, Lilieth, Hope, Pauline, Jean and Pearlie; nephews, Ralph, Busta, Valen, Euval, Almando and Errol; and many other relatives and friends.

Melissa Parks, a Rockaway resident for over 20 years, died April 29. She was 82.

Parks was born on April 4, 1924 in Peachtree, Alabama. She was a member of St. Johns Baptist Church under Reverend Wade Richmond, Pastor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmet Gordan Dean.

Parks is survived by her son, Andrew Parks; daughter-in-law, Angela Parks; grandchildren, Ceaira Parks, Diamond Parks, and Xavier Parks; great-granddaughter, Jamirah Hamilton; goddaughter, Ellen Greer; sister-in-law, Fannie Anderson; nieces and nephews, Willie Anderson, Bonnie Anderson, Linda Anderson, Donnie Anderson, Ronnie Anderson, William Provitte, Evelyn Provitte, and Landis Provitte; and four special friends, James, Stephanie, Jeanette and Dr. Mitchell Kurk.

Helena Gertrude Parris, a Rockaway resident for over 30 years, died May 2. She was 97.

Parris was born on December 13, 1908 in Melvin Hill St. Joseph, Barbados. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Russell Sage Memorial Church in Far Rockaway, under Dr. Benjamin J. Patterson, Pastor.

She is survived by her children, Marva and Rolando Wallace, and Carmen and Randolph Drakes, Sr.; grandchildren, Louis, Randolph Jr., Rodney, Cherette and Christina; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Kaneii; and many other relatives and friends.

Reed, a night club manager, was born on January 8, 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her father, Matthew Anderson of New York; brother, James Matthew Anderson of Boligee, Alabama; and uncle, Herman Harris of Eutaw, Alabama.

Thomas A. Smith, a Rockaway resident for 65 years, died May 3.

Smith, a proprietor and the former owner of Clear Tone Carpet Cleaners, was born in Rockaway Beach. He was a member of AARP.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald G. Smith; and nephew, B.J. Smith.

Smith is survived by his brothers, William Smith, and Daniel J. Smith, Jr. (Ann); nieces, Elizabeth Smith, Danielle Smith, and Corinne Jones; and nephews, Christopher, Michael and Danny Smith.

Belle Solomon

Realtor

Belle Solomon, the proprietor of Belle Solomon Realty for 55 years, died May 4. She was 90.

Solomon, who was born in the Bronx, was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School. She began her career in real estate in her late 30s with $2,500. She was honored last year with the "Rockaway Means Business Award" by the Rockaway Revitalization and Development Corporation.

"I love working in the Rockaway community," she wrote in RDRC's awards journal last year. "I have been able to put some wonderful people in some beautiful homes. I hope that will be my legacy."

Solomon is survived by her daughters, Judith Solomon and Wendy Kruger; granddaughter, Hallie Kruger; and friend and business partner, Dr. Mitchell Kurk.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapel. Interment and a service were at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Rose Turner

Rockaway Resident

Rose Turner, a Rockaway resident for over three years, died April 27. She was 95.

Turner was born on January 8, 1908 in James Island, South Carolina.

She is survived by her grandson, Anthony A. Dixon; granddaughter-in-law, Chantel L. Dixon; great-grandson, Jason Anthony Dixon; son-in-law, Albertues Dixon; nieces, Pritchinella Walker and Carrie Sweeper; and many other relatives and friends.
