Countdown to Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Is Underway
The final RBVL pre-season meeting was held on Wednesday, 4/26 at the Kerry Hills Pub and team captains gathered to insure their spot in the league. 39 out of 40 teams signed up for another go-around (We must be doing something right) and rosters, uniform orders and fees were collected. If you need additional forms they can be found on our website at www.rbvl.com.
Since the meeting, the executive committee led by President Patty Moule voted to expand the league to 46 teams to accommodate the 7 teams on the waiting list. Each is filled with long-time Rockaway neighbors and friends and we are thrilled to welcome them to the RBVL family. This has not been done without some fear and trepidation. The expansion means we need more equipment, referees and beach space, all of which are tough to come by. We may need to ask for more help from you to make this all work smoothly. With a few more bodies lending a hand each Wednesday night, we should be OK. The benefits of adding many of our local comrades to the fold should make it well worth the effort.
Much has been going on behind the scenes in preparation for the upcoming season. Early projections call for 6 or 7 different divisions with varying levels of skill.
Next week the divisional breakdown and the bar schedule for the season should be available and will be published in our weekly Wave article. (Rumor has it that the top division will consist of one team, and one team only - Freedhand's Court Champs.) Concerning the family split in the Boardwalk division, Cement Shoes says: It's all bad that "It's All Better" has split from "It's All Good" but Allison says: "It's All Better" will show "It's All Good" who's the best. Got it?
Once again we remind you to mark a few special dates on your calendars. Wednesday, 5/24 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully it won't rain for the fourth straight year.
Wednesday, 5/31 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until 8/12. On Saturday, 8/13 the league championships will be played at Riis Park during the day - keep your schedules clear. Last year's extravaganza was co-sponsored by Lipton and Gateway NPS and it was a blast!
It's not too early to save the date of the league awards dinner, which will be held at the Beach Club on Friday night, 9/15. Mark your calendar, that's an order!
It will only be 12 days before we meet on the beach. If you have any questions before then please call Patty Moule at 917-566-2809. (Call between 10 AM and 9 PM)
Let the games begin!
See you on the beach on 5/24.
