Weed and Seed Seeks Applications For Fiscal Agent/Site Coordinator
By Miriam Rosenberg
The Far Rockaway Weed and Seed, which found itself without a fiscal agent and site coordinator after the Queens Library and its representative stepped down from the posts, is now actively seeking replacements. The Weed and Seed site has been without either position filled since May 1.
"The process is time sensitive," said Ed Williams, chair of the Far Rockaway site's steering committee. He added that the "process would be above reproach. I know there are come real concerns about how this is happening."
The Justice Department's Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO) runs the Weed and Seed program.
According to the website http:// www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ccdo/ws/what_application_includes.pdf, "A fiscal agent must agree to manage all future Weed and Seed funds approved by the Weed and Seed Steering Committee and in accordance with the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) Financial Guidelines.
"The fiscal agent works cooperatively with the Steering Committee and site coordinator to ensure fiscal accountability and that the funds are expended as approved by the CCDO and the OJP Office of the Comptroller."
The manual for the site coordinator explains "the site coordinator is a full-time 'hands-on' person working in the Weed and Seed neighborhood who becomes the link between residents of the neighborhood, the Safe Haven staff, law enforcement officials and the site's steering committee."
The requirements for fiscal agent are experience in grant writing and fundraising; experience and knowledge of the Weed and Seed program and experience in the Rockaway area and its programs.
The position of site coordinator is a full-time job, requiring some travel, flexible hours, the ability to multi-task, strong leadership skills, experience in program development, grant writing and fundraising and an ability to deal with government agencies - particularly law enforcement.
All of the applications can be found on line.
All proposals for fiscal agent or site coordinator will be reviewed and independent panels will interview prospective agencies or persons
