A Hot, smoky fire at 320 Beach 100 Street in the Bay Towers housing complex forced many residents from the building on Thursday afternoon as firefighters, police, and emergency medical workers cleared the area and the building. The fire reportedly broke out in Apartment 4E and spread to two adjoining apartments. Firefighters put the blaze out in a matter of minutes, but this unidentified tot, who was stranded in one of the stairwells, was rescued by EMS workers and police officers. Photo by Howard Schwach. McKinley Hightower-Beyah, of the Hamer-Campos Farmer's Market in Rockaway, took part in the New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA) "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" on Thursday, April 27. Hightower-Beyah, a consultant for the NYCHA Garden and Greening program that is headed by Howard Hemmings of the NYCHA, worked with 45 children, inspiring them to grow and eat fresh produce, practice good nutrition and maintain open green spaces. Hightower-Beyah is also working with the youth at the Redfern Community Center, at a site where they are growing flowers and vegetables.
