McKinley Hightower-Beyah, of the Hamer-Campos Farmer's Market in Rockaway, took part in the New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA) "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" on Thursday, April 27. Hightower-Beyah, a consultant for the NYCHA Garden and Greening program that is headed by Howard Hemmings of the NYCHA, worked with 45 children, inspiring them to grow and eat fresh produce, practice good nutrition and maintain open green spaces. Hightower-Beyah is also working with the youth at the Redfern Community Center, at a site where they are growing flowers and vegetables. St. John's Episcopal Hospital honored 55 volunteers with a luncheon on Thursday, April 27, during National Volunteers Week. Barbara Morris, President of the Rotary Club of Rockaway, delivered the keynote speech. Volunteers serve in a range of Hospital departments, including Hemodialysis, Dietary, Nursing, Admitting, Employee Health, the Hospitality Desk and many others. In 2005, the volunteers who were honored that day worked 12,991 man-hours. The volunteers range in age from 15 to more than 90 years old, and represent a cross section of society. Included among them are a retired dentist, a professor of literature, an aspiring pediatrician and a rabbi.
