'Marsh Madness' Rescheduled For Arbor Day

The American Littoral Society (ALS) is seeking volunteers for a marsh cleanup and planting event on Cross Bay Boulevard at East 12 Road in Broad Channel on Arbor Day, Saturday, April 29 starting at 1 p.m. The event was rained out on Earth Day.

The volunteers will help stem the loss of marsh in Jamaica Bay by removing debris from a local marsh and then planting plugs of Spartina aterniflora, commonly known as saltmarsh cord grass. Volunteers should wear boots and old clothes. Gloves will be provided.

Youngsters ages ten and above are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

For further information, contact Don Riepe, the Jamaica Bay Guardian, at (718) 318-9344 or driepe@nyc.rr.com.
