St.Edmunds Students Become Opera Enthusiasts
St. Edmund Prep High School has become a member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild's Met School Membership Program. The Met School Membership Program introduces students to opera in one of the world's greatest opera houses. The membership allows students to attend the final dress rehearsal of various operas.
The first performance that students attended was Aida, and there are plans to attend La Traviata and La Forzas Del Destino.
Mrs. Fusco, the foreign language coordinator and representative for the school's membership program, along with music teacher and Rockaway resident John Fabrizio, chaperoned the students
to the opera. The following students attended the opera: Francesca Aiello, Sandy Asencio, Sofia Calderon, Joseph Delea, Concetta Insauto, Thomas Kentauris, Stephen Mineo, Anthony Mottola, Robert O'Brien, Matthew Pavone, Daniel Petrosino, Michael Pietrafesa, Vito Pinto, Fina Politano, and Samantha Tropea.
Students are also taught about what the opera is, how it is produced and opera house etiquette. Discussions are held in school before and after each opera, and resources are provided to help teachers integrate opera into the curricular areas, prepare students for performances and enhance classroom activities.
