Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Holds First Important 06' Meeting
The snow came down heavy in the morning but stopped in plenty of time for the Rockaway volleyball players to mosey on down to Kerry Hills Pub on 4/5 for the first meeting of the 2006 season. Unfortunately, Punxaawny Cubby was nowhere to be found and no prediction was made as to the remaining length of winter. However, Rockaway Dancer showed up earlier than he has since the Reagan administration. Attendance was good and spirits were high in anticipation of the summer campaign.
Commissioner Patty Moule and several of her able committee members briskly attended to the important league matters at hand, most notably the collection of $100 deposits from returning teams. All but a handful of last year's squads came to the meeting to insure their place for 2006. Additionally, several new teams were placed on a waiting list to fill any unclaimed spots.
Early projections call for 6 different divisions with varying levels of skill. A suggestion was made to realign the teams into more accurate groupings based on drinking ability and to employ more appropriate names like the Heineken, Budweiser, Coors Light and O'Doul's divisions but no teams were willing to play in the O'Doul's non-alcoholic beverage section. And none are expected in the foreseeable future!
In preparation for the season, the next critical date is fast approaching. Our final meeting will be held on Wednesday, 4/26 at 8:00 PM at the Kerry Hills Pub. Captains are required to bring the balance of their league fee and their uniform orders. Rosters should be submitted as well. If a captain is unable to attend he must send a representative (and the money) in his place. The forms will be available on our website, whose address has been simplified to www.rbvl.com. The general feedback on the 2005 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone's input. Feel free to attend the meeting and to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes. We are always striving for improvement.
We asked the captains to do us a big favor by e-mailing your vital information (name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, team name) and the information for an alternate (or two) from your team. We asked you to send it directly to email@example.com as soon as possible. To date, zero e-mails have been received by Joe. We're looking to improve the speed and accuracy of our announcements and information dissemination sp please help us out.
Prospective new referees are welcome to come by if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.
You can mark a few special dates on your calendars already. Wednesday, 5/24 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully it won't rain for the fourth straight year. Wednesday, 5/31 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until 8/12.
On Saturday, 8/13 the league championships will be played at Riis Park during the day - keep your schedules clear. Last year's extravaganza was co-sponsored by Lipton and Gateway NPS and it was a blast! It's not too early to save the date of the league awards dinner, which will be held at the Beach Club on Friday night, 9/15. We don't want to hear you couldn't make it because you had a prior engagement, like your Aunt's housekeeper's cousin's neighbor's dog was being spayed and neutered that night. Mark your calendar!
It will only be a short few weeks before opening day arrives and there is still much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 917-566-2809 (Call between 10 AM and 9 PM.). I have two questions, "Was TBG voted off the island?" and, "Has Mary Whelan moved to Wysteria Lane?"
See you on 4/26.
