SFDS Boys Novice 5th Grade Basketball Boys Wins It All!!!
The St. Francis de Sales Novice Boys have won it all. With 14 players on their powerhouse rosterthe SFDS team proved to be the deepest, strongestand most resilient team by winning the Brooklyn/Queens CYO Championship.
The team was undefeated (18-0) in CYO competition and 9-1 in tournament competition. The Novice boys made several accomplishments during this season including defeating the previous champions St. Helen's 6 times. The boys also trounced a traveling team twice from Southington CT, in the SFDS/South Windsor Tournament Classic. The boys finished 2005 by winning the SFDS Christmas Tournament which included the best teams from Brooklyn and Queens.
The team played tough opponentsduring the playoffs but their sheer determination and offensive and defensive prowess earned them a spot in the championship. The championship was a rough game against divisional rival and previous champs St. Helen's.Down by 8 at half, SFDSbegan an amazing comeback sparked by excellent defense, pressing and key three pointers. In the 4th quarter SFDS outscored St. Helen's 22-9 and pulled ahead to win the championship. The game was spectacular and a fitting end to the CYO season. However the boys weren't finished. They continued to advance in the St. Mary's Gate of Heaven Tournament which they eventually won and captured that championship trophy despite some rough games.
The team is coached by Marty and Keith Andresen.Special thanks go to Steve Gigliello, Pat Kilgallen Sr., and Keith "Bugsy" Goldberg for assistance throughout the season on the bench and scorebook. Also special thanks go to Cathy Marquardt, and Mary Morgan the team mothers. Also thanks to Jim McKeon the PAR and to all the parents who came and supported the team. This year was truly a magical one andwe couldn't have asked for a better group of kids.Throughout the season everyone played, everyone contributed, and all could be proud.
