Channel View School For Research Hosts First After-School Dance
After much effort and planning, the student council of Channel View School for Research (CVSR) recently sponsored the school's first after-school dance. Over 200 students eagerly streamed into the Beach Channel gym for the event. Students who purchased tickets also enjoyed a break from their school uniforms, wearing their finest casual attire throughout the school day.
Those who attended were treated to the expert musical collection of popular Rockaway DJ "Timmy Tubbs" (thanks to the family "connections" of CVSR Principal, Patricia Tubridy). Tubbs kept the crowd on their feet with three straight hours of dance music.
Student Council President Joshua Rivera was pleased with the number of tickets sold and the great time that was had by all. Rivera said many students had expressed skepticism that a "DJ" arranged by the principal would be satisfactory, but they were thrilled when Tubbs was able to play almost all of their requests. "He played what we wanted to hear," said Rivera. Tubridy said she was gratified to see that "so many Channel View students are such excellent dancers." Over twenty Channel View teachers and staff members assisted with refreshments and the judging of the dance contest. A winner was selected in each grade, including: Shianna Crumbley (6th); Shanice Brown (7th); Derreca Bellefante (8th); Cynthia Almonte (9th); and DaQuan Hogan (10th). Shanice Brown was selected as overall winner.
Channel View School for Research opened in September 2004 with more than 400 students in grades six through nine, and added a 10th grade in September 2005. Located in a separate wing at Beach Channel High School, Channel View will add a grade each year until it includes all grades from six through 12.
