Hadassah Heart Luncheon Honorees Announced
The Rockaway Park Hadassah will present their "From The Heart Award" to two outstanding women in the community on Tuesday, May 9. Jean Mirkin will be recognized by her peers in the chapter and Barbara Larkin will be honored for her work on the community level.
The awards, which are presented annually at the Heart Luncheon, chaired by Faye Cohen at the Lawrence Country Club, have become an exciting event, which everyone involved in Hadassah looks forward to.
Mirkin grew up in Belle Harbor and attended PS 114, Brooklyn College and New York Technical College for Opticianry, the only woman in a class of 60 men taking state boards. She passed the first time and worked for 40 years at Mirkin Vision Care in Rockaway.
Now retired, she and her husband of 54 years, Alan, enjoy spending time with their three children and seven grandchildren. Mirkin has seen to it that 13 members of her family, including six granddaughters, are life Hadassah members.
In 1970 she married Peter Larkin, and they have three sons.
In 1972 Larkin began 30 years of teaching at PS 114, a job she cherished until retirement. In 1977, she came active in the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association, where she remains active to this day. In April of 2002, she received the Star Award from that organization. Larkin is also the recipient of the Community Builders Award for Outstanding Woman of the 12th Council District for "Commitment to the Education of Our Children."
