Broad Channel Bits
As Easter approaches, we learn that there is again the threat of closure of St. Virgilius School. Many people in the Channel thought that St. Virgilius School was set for the next five years as a result of the parents' business plan that was conceived last year. St. Virgilius School has educated generations of Channel residents, with the tradition of graduating from the school passing from parents to children to grandchildren. Ending that tradition would be heart-breaking to many.
Open House will be heldfor the Broad Channel Pre-K on Thursday,April 6 at 9 a.m.Registration will be held on Thursday,April 13 at 7 p.m.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a Brunch on Sunday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.All proceeds will be donated to Post #610 in Brook Park, Ohio for a Memorial dedicated to the 24 U. S. Marines from their post who were killed in Iraq.The auxiliary hopes all will come out and bring a friend or two.
On Friday, April 14 at 7 p.m. there will be A Night at the Races to benefit a Friend in Need at the American Legion Hall in Broad Channel.Their house was destroyed by a fire. There is a $10 donation at the door; there will be 50/50's, raffles, hot and cold buffet and beer and soda.
The Shad Creek Association presents its 1st Annual Flounder Derby to be held on Saturday, April 8. Start time is at 7 a.m. Weigh-in is at 3 p.m., SHARP. Prize money stands at: 1st Place $400, 2nd Place $200 and 3rd Place is $100. There will be a $10 per boat Calcutta for total weight of 3 flounder. There will be food and beverages at the Weigh-In Party. Another fishing derby will take place sometime in July.
PS 47 will celebrate its 85th birthday on Saturday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. The cost is $30.00 per person which includes hot buffet, beer, wine, soda, and D.J. music.A cash bar will also be available. Old pictures will be available for viewing. "Call yourold friends and bring them along. It will be a GREAT NIGHT!" promised one of our neighbors.
A bus ride to the Hilton Casino in Atlantic City will take place on Wednesday, April 19 and cost $29 per person. Sponsored by St. Virgilius Golden Age, the trip features a coin return of $19 and a food coupon worth $8 toward the buffet or $4 credit at Horizon's. The Broad Channel Pre-K will be holding a bake sale in front of the firehouse on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23 after all the masses.
BC Theatre Group presents "Into the Woods" at the American Legion Hall, Friday, April 21 and Saturday April 22 at 8 p.m. (adults only) $20; and Sunday, April 23 at 2 p.m. $15 - $10 for seniors and children under 12. The Library is encouraging library patrons 16 years old or younger to read and pay off library fines on their cards. All the young people have to do is go to the library and read for at least 1/2 hour to get Library Bucks worth $1 toward existing fines. If they read for an hour, they earn Bucks worth $2 off their fines. There are rules to this offer, so check it out with the librarian.
The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department will be having an Easter Egg Hunt at the Broad Channel Day Camp field at 20 Road on Saturday, April 15. Start time is noon. Children ages 0-10 can hunt for thousands of Easter eggs. There will be prizes and pictures with the Easter bunny. Cost is a $5 donation to help support the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department.Bring your own basket. Parents can help children 3 and under hunt for eggs.
Independent Marine Corps Cadets, a military style organization, is recruiting young men and women, ages 11 to 18 to become future cadets. Cadets learn the basics of being in the military and are taught a variety of lessons to help build confidence and self-esteem as well as pride and teamwork. Cadets meet Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the American Legion Hall on Crossbay Blvd. in Broad Channel. For more information, contact Col. St. Virgilius Golden Age would like to send the following to their neighbors: "Are you lonely? Are you depressed? Are you 50 or older? Do you wish for something to brighten up your life? We have the answer-come out and join us. We meet every Thursday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Christ Church Hall on Church Road from September through June. Dues are $10 a year. We have holiday parties, bus rides, bingo, horse racing, speakers on topics of interest to seniors (social security, Medicare, wills etc.) and a monthly bus ride to Green Acres Mall.
Come and socialize; enjoy coffee and cake with friends."
