Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Prepares for 2006 Season

Preparations for the Summer 2006 Rockaway Beach Volleyball League are underway. Patty Moule will again lead her troops into battle and try to top last year's very successful campaign. Each year the first order of business is to find out which teams will be returning and which will not. After a record-setting year with 40 teams this becomes even more critical this time around. Last year, 6 divisions of different playing (and imbibing) levels were fielded. That is likely to remain the same for '06.

In preparation for the season, the first critical date is fast approaching. Team captains are required to attend our first meeting of the year at Kerry Hills Pub on Wednesday, 4/5 at 8:00 PM. Captains should bring a deposit of $100 per team to insure a spot in the league. This season the league entry fee is being raised for the first time in 6 years from $500 to $550. Increased referee fees, equipment expenses (wait until you see the new bags) and a touch of inflation make this necessary. If a captain is unable to attend he must send a representative in his place. Roster and uniform order forms will also be distributed to each team.

All players are welcome to come out of hibernation and join the festivities as well. The general feedback on the 2005 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone's input. Feel free to attend the first meeting and to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes. We are always striving for improvement.

Prospective new referees are welcome to come by if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.

Captains can do us a big favor by emailing your vital information (name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, team name) and the information for an alternate (or two) from your team. Please send the info to joe.mcgiv ney@citigroup.com as soon as possible; you don't have to wait for the meeting. We're looking to improve the speed and accuracy of our announcements and information dissemination. (Look that up in your Funk and Wagnall's, Murph!)

You can mark a few special dates on your calendars already. We will hold the final meeting before the season on Wednesday, 4/26 at 8:00 PM at Kerry Hills. Rosters, uniform orders and payment in full is due at that time. Wednesday, 5/24 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully it won't rain for the fourth straight year. Wednesday, 5/31 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until 8/12. On Saturday, 8/12, the league championships will be played - keep your schedules clear. Last year's extravaganza was co-sponsored by Lipton and Gateway NPS and it was a blast!

It will only be a couple of months before the "Desperate Housewives" and "Survivors" of Rockaway meet on the sands of Riis Park for yet another summer of fun. Opening day will arrive quickly and there is much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 917-566-2809. This is her cell number and a message can be left anytime, day or night. See you on 4/5.
