What Happened Here In The Year 1901 Changed The History Of The Rockaways
If you have been a loyal and rabid follower of Historical Views over the last quarter century in The Wave, you should have no problem recalling this. What took place in this Exposition Building at Buffalo, New York in 1901, which changed the history of the Rockaways for many years to come? Test your memory class! The only alibi accepted is Alzheimer's!
Answer: President William McKinley was assassinated in this building, and L.A. Thompson moved his midway attractions and roller coaster to Rockaway Beach. In 1902, the Thompson Attractions opened as part of Steeplechase Amusement Park in Seaside. Three years later, Thompson bought the plot from George C. Tilyou and opened his L.A. Thompson Amusement Park, which became Rockaway's Playland in 1928.
