The team competes in dojo and at outside locations on a regular basis. The district championships included team from New York City, Long Island, upstate and Connecticut. Over 200 athletes compete in KATA (Forms), Kumite (Sparring) and Kobido (weapons), as well as three man team events. Every team member medaled in at least one or more events. Sensei Bruce Hodes states that we are proud of our Rockaway presence at the Karate Tournament. Our Athletes not only do well, they represent Rockaway with respect and good sportsmanship. Artist Lynn Irena Jadamec came to Rockaway about a year ago and has been working on a group of oil paintings based on Rockaway scenes, primarily those of beach, ocean and the surfing community. "I am really inspired by the surf culture and the architecture of the Rockaways," she says. "I have been trying to capture their uniqueness and beauty." Pictured, Jadamec on her surfboard off the Rockaway Shore and a number of her Rockaway oils. Jadamec is a 1997 graduate of the University of Connecticut and the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. She has earned a BA in Fine Arts and has been a student at the Art Students League in Manhattan. Her paintings can be seen at an exhibit at the Lyons Wier Gallery in Chelsea, 511 West 25 Street in Manhattan. They will be on view until mid-April.
