Skaters-Turned-Activists Win More Skate Time

Starting this week, the Rockaway Skate Park on Shore Front Parkway in Rockaway Beach will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting, City Councilman Joseph Addabbo Jr. told The Wave on Wednesday. The park's opening was moved up about a month this season in response to a request from local skaters, who want to see the park open year-round. "I hope they understand as long as they enjoy the park and behave themselves - do what they're supposed to do - all should go well," Addabbo said of the trial run. The councilman said the Department of Parks and Recreation decision proves that young residents have a voice in their community. "We didn't spend $500,000 for it to be open four months out of the year," he added.
