Dr. Simra E. Shein Director Of Surgery At PHC
Dr. Simra E. Shein, the director of surgery at Peninsula Hospital Center and a Rockaway resident for more than 30 years, died March 5.
Born in the Bronx, he was a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, Columbia University and SUNY Downstate, on a New York State Medical Scholarship. His internship was completed at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan.
Dr. Shein served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was active duty from 1957 to 1959. When his tour of duty was completed, he returned to finish his residency at the Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He practiced general surgery with additional hand surgery skills. He came to Peninsula Hospital Center in 1972 and had a private practice there as well. He was an executive committee member at PHC and St. John's Episcopal Hospital.
Dr. Shein was a past president of Ohab Zedek of Belle Harbor.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Dr. David Shein (Cheray), Hilary Rothman (Eric), Jordan Shein (Jaime), Warren Shein and Jeremy Shein; grandchildren, Daniella, Jared, Zachary, Natalia, Arielle and Daniella; brother, Ira and his wife; and nieces and nephews.
A service was held at Ohab Zedek in Belle Harbor. The family will be sitting Shiva at the Shein residence, 212 Beach 141 in Belle Harbor. All other arrangements were kept private.
Eula Barnes, a Rockaway resident for over 50 years, died January 28. She was 57.
Barnes, a nurse's aide, was born on July 25, 1948 in Far Rockaway. She was also a member of St. John Baptist Church.
Barnes was preceded in death by her father, Ben Cummings; grandmother, Eula Mae Walker; mother, Annie Ree Cummings; and daughter, Tracy Mo'na.
She is survived by her children, La-Tarsha Barnes Allen (Glenn), and Marvin Barnes (Petronia); grandchildren, Shannon and Dominique Barnes, and Maliyah and Hakeem; great-grandchild, Laychelle Xandria Robinson; sister, Anne King (Roy); nephew, Darryl Leget; nieces, Melissa, Destiny, Dornita, Lay-Lay and Kenya; great-niece, Qua-Nay; adopted aunts, Margaret and Mary Davis and Viola Barnes; extended family, the Davis', Harris' Morris'; special friends, Dahl, Debra, Pat, Emma and family; the Rochburn's, Miss Rose, Miss Linda, Georgia and Linda Calloway; and the entire 82-03 building.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. Visitation was held at St. John's Baptist Church in Arverne. Interment was at Rockville Cemetery.
Gertrude A. Daly
Gertrude A. Daly, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died March 3.
Daly, a nurse's aide, was born in Rockaway Park. She was a member of many senior groups.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Daly; daughters, Noreen and Kathy Daly; and son, Jamie Daly.
Daly is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Daly and her husband Peter Migliorini; grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Tricia Livingston, and Craig and his wife Jeanine Livingston; niece, Sandy and her husband Sonny Livingston; great-grandchildren, Bridget, Kathleen, Sarah, Stephen and Christopher II.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis de Sales Church. Interment was held at Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn, New York.
Robert S. Donohue
Robert S. Donohue, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died February 28. He was 57.
Donohue, a truck driver, was born on September 23,1948 in Manhattan. He served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1968-1971.
Donohue was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline (nee Boody); father, John Donohue; and mother, Margaret Donohue (nee O'Keefe).
He is survived by his son, Brian Donohue; and brother, John Donohue.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Camillus on Saturday, March 11 at 10 a.m. A cemetery service and interment will be held at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.
Brenda Faye Ivory
Longtime Rockaway Resident
Brenda Faye Ivory, a Rockaway resident for over 30 years, died February 21. She was 40.
Ivory, who was educated in the Rockaway public school system, was born on November 4, 1965 in Indianola, Michigan. She was a member of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Rockaway Beach.
She is survived by her three children, Darquwan Ivory, Chaquita Ivory and Tanaya Mathis; one grandson, Darquwan Ivory Jr.; parents, Dessie Ivory and Paul Barnes; brothers, Paul Barnes Jr. and Andre Ivory; sisters, Sharon Grant and Tara Ivory; nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and many relatives and friends.

Weiner Kalpht, a Rockaway resident for 30 years, died March 3. She was 87.
Kalpht, a bookkeeper, was born on December 15, 1919 in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. She was also a dispatcher for the Citizens on Patrol in the 101 Precinct.
Kalpht is survived by her six children; sister, Ena Simpson; daughters-in-law and sons-in-law; 28 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Kevin Michael Smith
Kevin Michael Smith, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died February 23. He was 18.
Smith, a student who was educated in the Far Rockaway public school system, was born on June 9, 1987 in Queens.
He is survived by his parents, Kenny and Helga Smith; special friends, Gregory, Gilbert, Jahkarr and Kenny; and many other relatives and friends.

Albert Throw, a 30-year Rockaway resident, died March 6. He was 69.
Throw, a truck driver, was born in Elloree, South Carolina on November 2, 1936. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Throw is survived by his wife, Mable Throw; sons, Jerry and Robert Throw; daughters, Eloise Throw, Ruth Bush, Kim Floyd, Nellie Gleaton, Jamel Throw, Beverly Thompson and Tyanna Floyd; foster children, Brianna, Adante and Natari Oliver; brothers, Richard, John and Samuel Throw; sisters, Laura, Rachel and Linda; 17 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Ora T. Todd
Ora T. Todd, a Rockaway resident for over 30 years, died February 26. She was 59.
Todd, a bank teller, was born on April 22, 1946 in Carrolton, Alabama. She was also a member of the Beth-El Temple Church of God in Christ.
Todd was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; parents, Annie Henley and Leroy Woods; grandmother, Mary; uncles, James, Wardell, Reverend Luther and Willie T.; aunt, Lanie Will Washington; cousin, Reverend Z. Horton; and stepchildren, Irvine Jr., Tyrone, Stacey and Janice.

Catherine M. Wall
Catherine M. Wall, a Rockaway resident since 1960, died March 7.
Wall, a homemaker, was a native of New Foundland, Canada. She was an active member of the Columbiettes of the Knights of Columbus; the St. Francis de Sales Sea Breeze organization; a member of St. Camillus Golden Age; a member of the Democratic Club and Board of Elections; and the American Cancer Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Wall.
Wall is survived by her son, John Wall (Rosa); daughters, Barbara Byrnes (Albert) and Patricia Ford (Richard); and seven grandchildren, Richard, Bryan, Kerry, Jennifer, Sean, Katie and George.
