County Tyrone Pipes Take First In Parade

The County Tyrone Pipe Band took first place again this year at the Rockaway St. Patrick's Day parade. The band, voted Best Pipe Band by the judges, is based in Bellerose and Rockaway. It is the oldest pipe band in New York City in continuous existence, since 1933, and has won many awards and accolades over its long history. Many metro area pipe bands were started by people trained by the Tyrone band.

Many band officers and members reside in Rockaway, including past Pipe Major and 2006 Parade Honoree John McManus; Pipe Major Dr. Peter Galvin; Pipe Sergeant John McFadden; Pipe Corporal Rob Finley; Quartermaster Bill Peyton; and Instructor Jim Curley. The Mahoney family of Breezy Point also fills the ranks with pipers and drummers.
