A series of fights that involved up to 20 girls broke out at dismissal at Beach Channel High School on Monday, bringing a large police response and 12 arrests.

While school officials declined to comment on the fights, a spokesperson for the Department of Education told The Wave that "a large number of girls were involved in three separate fights at the school," and that "appropriate action would be taken by the school" in all of the cases.

Police sources declined to release the names of those arrested because they are all juveniles, but each of them was reportedly given a Desk Appearance Ticket that requires them to report to court at a later date. For several hours, groups of parents waited in front of the 100 Precinct in Rockaway Beach for their children to be processed and released in their custody.

The fights reportedly spilled over into Tuesday as well, with an unidentified student arrested for bringing a knife to school. The Wave has not been able to corroborate that report, however.
