Winter's cold has a firm grip on our corner of the planet. Of course, seasons do move on and the flowers and other green things will sprout and bring colorful beauty to everyone's back and front yards again. In the meantime, the cold is here to stay for a while longer. But, renewal for all of us is just around the corner.
Christ Presbyterian Church will hold a Children's Bingo in the church hall on Sunday, March 12. Lunch will be at noon; the price of $2 includes a hot dog, chips and drink. Bingo is from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., with admission costing $3, which includes game boards, a cupcake and a free chance on a door prize. Prizes will be appropriate for 6 years old and up.
The American Legion Auxiliary Post 1404 will be hosting a Brunch on Sunday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is the 3rd Annual Jane Fuller Memorial Brunch and all proceeds will go to Cancer Care.Last year over $2,000 was donated to Cancer Care.“Please come out and support this important event," says a woman from the auxiliary.
The St. Virgilius Parents Association is sponsoring a $10,000 Giveaway to benefit St. Virgilius School. The Grand Prize is $10,000 and there will also be 17 secondary prizes. Each ticket allows two people to attend the giveaway drawing and cocktail party, which will be held on Sunday, March 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Hall.
The Library is encouraging library patrons 16 years old or younger to read and pay off library fines on their cards. All the young people have to do is go to the library and read for at least a half an hour to get Library Bucks worth $1 toward existing fines. If they read for an hour, they earn Bucks worth $2 off their fines. There are rules to this offer, so check it out with the librarian.
This news from PS 47: "On April 8 at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall partygoers will celebrate PS 47's 85th Birthday.The cost is $30 per person, which includes: hot buffet, beer, wine soda, and D.J. music.A cash bar will also be available. Old pictures will be available for viewing; call yourold friends and bring them along. It will be a GREAT NIGHT."

SAVE THE DATE! The Shad Creek Association presents its 1st Annual Flounder Derby to be held on Saturday, April Start time is at 7 a.m. Weigh-in is at 3 p.m., SHARP. Captain's meeting and sign-up is on Wednesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse, which is located 529 Crossbay Boulevard, Broad Channel. Entry fee is $20 per angler. Prize money stands at: 1st Place $400; 2nd Place $200, and 3rd Place is $100. There will be a $10 per boat calcutta for total weight of 3 flounder. There will be food and beverages at the Weigh-In Party. A Defensive Driving Course, sponsored by the St. Virgilius P.A., will be given on Monday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 22 at St. Virgilius School at 16 Noel Road, Broad Channel, from 7 to 10 p.m. By attending, you can receive 10% off your car insurance for three years OR up to four points off your license. The course will be held in the lunchroom. The fee for the course is $55. Seating is limited; reserve early. Payment in full guarantees a seat. At Rockaway Artists Alliance's general meeting on Monday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. there will be a presentation on "Art & Healing," which will be presented by chiropractor Dr. Nancy Gahles. The general meeting will be held on Fort Tilden in T149. You do not have to be a member of RAA to attend general meetings.
Two Channel artists will be exhibiting in the next RAA show, which is called "Intrusion or Intimacy." It begins on Saturday, March 11 from noon until 4 p.m. in Fort Tilden's T6 building. One artist will have photography in the exhibit, while the other presents in oil paints. The opening of the exhibit will be on Sunday, March 12 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and includes light refreshments and entertainment. I got an email that is important to everyone in the Channel who owns a car. It is about "... the recent rash of car break-ins.Apparently there have been a large number of cars broken into in the past several weeks. Those responsible are looking for quick cash, cigarettes, CDs and radios.They do blocks at a time.EVERYONE WHOSE CAR HAS BEEN AFFECTED SHOULD- REGARDLESS IF YOU CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT IS MISSING - REPORT IT TO THE PRECINCT.The only way we can get a squad car to ride around is if everyone reports it."
