Missing Tot And Teen Found In Rockaway Beach
A teenage Brooklyn girl was arrested in Rockaway Beach Tuesday night, about a day after she disappeared from her home with her infant stepbrother and sparked a missing persons search.
Jessenia DeJesus, 17, left her father’s apartment on Dean Street in Crown Heights sometime Sunday night with 10-month-old Jose Ortiz in tow, according to police. DeJesus was watching her stepbrother for her father and his ex-girlfriend, the infant’s mother.
DeJesus and Ortiz were reported missing at about 4:30 a.m. Monday – after the exasperated adults returned from shopping and found the apartment empty, according to police. DeJesus called a relative about 18 hours after she and the tot were reported missing and said she was on Beach 88 Street in Rockaway Beach.
Police got the tip and found DeJesus and Ortiz on the street.
The baby was brought to Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center in Brooklyn for observation, and was later released to his mother. DeJesus was arrested and is charged with custodial interference and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
Family members could not be reached and it was unclear why DeJesus brought Ortiz to Rockaway.
