Broad Channel Bits

The Winds Of March Blow
By Liz Guarino

The winds of March have been blowing lately, offsetting the mild winter we had been experiencing. An old saying claims that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. That isn’t always true. One year, long ago, there was a blizzard on the last day of March. And in a fairly recent year, March came in like a lamb—and left the same way.

Last week an important piece of information was missing from the next item. Please note the following: There is bus transportation available to and from St. Virgilius School for eligible students, at no cost. St. Virgilius Parish School, at 16 Noel Road in Broad Channel, will hold Open House on Sunday, March 5 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. or call the school for an appointment. The phone number is (718) 634-6237. Scholarships of $1000 per year for five years for newly enrolled families are available.

The American Legion Auxiliary Post 1404 will be hosting a Brunch on Sunday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is the 3rd Annual Jane Fuller Memorial Brunch and all proceeds will go to Cancer Care. Last year over $2,000 was donated to Cancer Care. “Please come out and support this important event,” says a woman from the Auxiliary.

A Defensive Driving Course, sponsored by the St. Virgilius P. A., will be given on Monday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 22 at St. Virgilius School at 16 Noel Road, Broad Channel, from 7 to 10 p.m. By attending, you can receive 10% off your car insurance for three years OR up to four points off your license. The course will be held in the lunchroom. The fee for course is $55. Seating is limited; reserve early. Payment in full guarantees a seat. (They are unable to hold a seat without payment) No test is given, and refreshments will be served. To register, call Helen at (718) 945-4648 or Cindy at (718) 634-5449. People who attended the March 2003 course will find that their certificates expire in March 2006.

The Library has begun a program to encourage library patrons 16 years old or younger to read and pay off library fines on their cards. All that the young people have to do is go to the library and read for at least half an hour to get Library Bucks worth $1 toward existing fines. If they read for an hour, they earn Bucks worth $2 off their fines. There are rules to this offer, but it sounds like a good plan. Check it out with the librarian. Then read away those fines.

The Broad Channel Pre-K will be hosting a bar night out on Saturday, March 25 at Grassy’s. Sixthboro will be playing at 9 p.m.  There is a $5 cover charge and there will be a door prize and raffles.

This news from PS 47: “On April 8 at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, partygoers will celebrate PS 47’s 85th Birthday. The cost is $30 per person, which includes: hot buffet, beer, wine soda, and DJ music. A cash bar will also be available. Old pictures will be available for viewing; call your old friends and bring them along. It will be a GREAT NIGHT.”

Happy Birthday to Jasmin Tatiana Kolzow, who is 12 years old on March 3. You will have a very big surprise waiting for you. I hope you have a very wonderful birthday!

At Rockaway Artists Alliance’s general meeting in March, there will be a presentation on a topic of interest to many folks. The topic for the March meeting is “Art & Healing,” which will be presented by chiropractor Dr. Nancy Gahles. The general meeting will be held on Monday, March 13 at Fort Tilden in T149. You do not have to be a member of the RAA to attend general meetings.

A Tax Assistance Program from AARP is available at the Library on Wednesdays and will be there through April 12. Call the branch at (718) 318 4943 for program hours and availability.

The next RAA show opens on Saturday, March 11 from noon until 4 p.m. in Fort Tilden’s T6 building; two Broad Channel artists will be exhibiting in it. One artist will have photography in the exhibit, while the other presents oil paint on wood. The opening of the exhibit will be on Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and includes light refreshments and entertainment. Sunday gallery hours are from 1 until 4 p.m. Call the RAA at (718) 474-0861 for more information.

One of our neighbors needs someone to do some typing on a PC during the day. It is a paying job, and it is piecework. So it is on an as-needed basis. Typing speed is not at all important. Of course, familiarity with a PC is. Further details will be given to those applying. Email me or drop a note in my mailbox.

Here is an easy way to help St. Virgilius School: get and use Waldbaum’s Gift Cards when you shop at their food store. They come in $25, $50 and $100 amounts. A portion of the card price bolsters school fundraising efforts. Gift cards are available during office hours at the rectory and school office. Or call Dawn at (718) 474-4182, Kieran at (718) 474-6273 or Suzanne at (718) 945-3922; gift cards obtained at these numbers will be delivered.

Both of our schools are involved in the General Mills box tops for education program. Box tops are worth 10 cents to the schools! A box in the main lobby of P.S. 47 collects them. At St. Virgilius School they can be left at the school office.
