Two exhibitions that are presently on view, which celebrate Black History Month are Building Community: The African Scene and Images of Color. Building Community at the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery examines the relationship of the individual to the architectural structures in her/his community.
Specifically, the artworks in this show illustrate how architecture has historically symbolized stability, domesticity, economic security and patriotism in the African American community. Major African American artists in the exhibition include Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and William H. Johnson. Building Community: The African Scene is on view through March 11. The Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is located at 24 West 57th Street in Manhattan. I hope to have a firsthand report on this exhibit next week.
Images of Color is presented by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and Bellevue Hospital Center. It is on view through March 16 at Bellevue Hospital Center, Atrium at 462 First Avenue. Work by some 50 African American artists can be seen in this exhibition that celebrates Black History Month and the 70th anniversary of the Health and Hospitals Corporation Art Collection. Artists include Benny Andrews, Emma Amos, Richard Mayhew, Stephanie Chisholm, Charles White and William T. Williams.
