Broad Channel Bits

By Liz Guarino

Playing hide and seek with winter weather is tiring for some of our neighbors, who are already wishing for spring. Colder temperatures give new meaning to the expression “a nice brisk walk.” But, this past week temperatures stayed up in the 30’s—not bad for February.

The Day of Recollection for People with Disabilities will take place on Saturday, February 25 at Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day includes a continental breakfast, inspiring talks, hot buffet lunch with ample socializing time. There will be a Penance Service with opportunity for individual confession. Mass will be at 3 p.m. and fulfills the Sunday obligation. If you want to attend, let me know.

Have a Bloody Mary or screwdriver or plain juice. Roll and coffee or tea and cake are also included. The price of brunch is $6.

The Broad Channel Theatre Group will sponsor a day of great music—from Big Band to Motown—on Sunday, February 26 at the American Legion Hall from 2 to 5 p.m. The cost is $10, payable at the door; it will help support their April production of “Into the Woods.” The BCTC donates a portion of their proceeds every year to an organization; this year a donation will be made to St. Virgilius School.

A note signed Rev. Andrea Zarou was in my mailbox and this is what it said: “Many thanks to all who attended Game Night. A great time had by all.” The next Game Night will be held on Thursday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m.

At Rockaway Artists Alliance’s general meeting in March, there will be a presentation on a topic of interest to many folks. The topic for the March meeting is “Art & Healing,” which will be presented by chiropractor Dr. Nancy Gahles. The general meeting will be held on Monday, March 13 in Fort Tilden in T149. You do not have to be a member of RAA to attend general meetings.

There are a few more days for online shoppers to take part in a fundraising opportunity for St. Virgilius School. Until February 28, Big Blue Turtle will donate 50% of its earned commission to the school; specific steps need to be followed to ensure the donation. To browse the website to find a store you would like to shop at, go to http:// www.bigblueturtle.com. You can email the CEO, Matthew Schilling at MSchilling@bigblueturtle.com for further details on how to take part in this fundraiser.

A Tax Assistance Program from AARP is available at the Library on Wednesdays and will be there through April 12.
