Ronald Armstrong, a lifelong Rockaway Beach resident, died at his home in Pompano Beach, Florida on February 12.
Armstrong, who was born in Brooklyn, was a retired carpenter.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Kenneth, Robert, Richard and Thomas; and a nephew, Danny.
Armstrong is survived by his brother, James; sister-in-law, Patricia Armstrong; nephews, Robert and Michael Armstrong; and niece, Lorraine Piazza.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 17, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima on Saturday, February 18, 9:45 a.m. Interment will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
Joseph Ferdinand Carvalhido
Promenade Nursing Home Resident
Joseph Ferdinand Carvalhido, a resident at the Promenade Nursing Center in Rockaway Park, died February 13. He was 92.
Carvalhido, a New York City resident since 1933, was born on January 18, 1914 in Viana do Costello, Portugal. On September 19, 1943, he married Angelina DiPippa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Victoria Torres Carvalhido.
Carvalhido is survived by his wife, Angelina; two sons, Joseph Carvalhido (Marie) of Breezy Point and Michael Carvalhido (Linda) of Marlboro, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Joseph Carvalhido of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, John Carvalhido of Breezy Point, Stephanie McHoul of Hopewell Junction, New York; and Michael Carvalhido of Marlboro, New Jersey; brother, Antonio Carvalhido (Renee) of Portugal; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thomas More Church in Breezy Point. Interment was held at Calvary National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 360 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10017.
Eugene H. Finkel
Eugene H. Finkel, a Belle Harbor resident for 75 years, died February 11. He was 90.
Finkel, a dentist and oral surgeon who had a practice on Beach 116 until his retirement in 1985, was born on July 3, 1915 in Rockaway Park. He was also a member of the dental staff at Peninsula Hospital Center for over 40 years. Finkel served his country in the U.S. Army as a captain during World War II. He was attached to the 39th Engineers, seeing action in North Africa and Italy during his 33 months overseas. Finkel was the President of the Rockaway Rotary Club for two separate terms, and received the International Rotary Foundation’s prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award in appreciation of his “tangible and significant assistance given for the futherance of better understanding and friendly relations between people of the world.”
He was preceded in death by his wife, Selma Newberger Finkel; and sister, Renee Finkel Kleeberg.
Finkel is survived by his daughter, Nancy J. Ross (Dr. Fred Ross); son, Robert A. Finkel (Linda); sister, Joyce M. Dillon; grandchildren, Jordan D. Neuringer, Jeremy A. Neuringer, Bryan P. Finkel, Courtney L. Finkel, and Shannon N. Finkel.
Interment with military honors occurred on February 15 at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, following a graveside service.
Leonard C. Lane
Leonard C. Lane, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died February 14.
Lane, who was born in Brooklyn, worked as a patient transporter for over 20 years at Peninsula Hospital Center.
He is survived by his mother, Edna Lane; wife, Caroline Lane; sons, John and Leonard Lane, Jr.; daughters, Abbie and Erica Lane; father-in-law, Donald Meyer; mother-in-law, Barbara Meyer; sister, Tracy Pagan; godchildren, Theresa and Crystal; and grandchildren, Olivia, Arianna, William, Jalyssa, and baby Emily.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 17, 10 a.m., at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea. Interment will be held at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
Retired Clearing House Clerk
Irene Mackiewicz, a Rockaway resident for nearly 25 years, died February 14.
Mackiewicz, who was born in Brooklyn, was a retired clearing house clerk for Chase Manhattan Bank. She was a member of the Hammel Senior Citizen Club.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Mackiewicz; brother, William; sisters, Violet Fadde and Florence Nidzgorski.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Camillus. Interment was at Mt. Olivet in Maspeth.
Earther Lee McKnight
Earther Lee McKnight, a Rockaway resident for over 20 years, died February 9. She was 62.
McKnight, a telephone operator, was born on August 17, 1943 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie James McKnight; and sons, Jerome Keith McKnight and Tyrone McKnight.
McKnight is survived by her daughters, Elaine Poindexter-McKnight (Michael), and Latesha Renee McKnight-Brown (Kevin); sons, Willie McKnight, Jr., Robert D. McKnight (Pat), and Sharm Darnell Dunlap (Johanna); sisters, Johnna May Dunlap, Betty Sue Dunlap, Joan Simpson and Ruby Dunlap; brothers, J.W. and June L. Dunlap, Jr.; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Faith M. Mellad
Faith M. Mellad, a Rockaway resident for over 30 years, died February 12. She was 61.
Mellad, a home attendant, was born on March 3, 1944 in Kingston, Jamaica. She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Beryl Mellad.
Mellad is survived by her daughter, Keysha Fearon; aunt, Ruby; cousins, Andrea and Roy Harnett-Robinson, Vilma Morris, Carmen Henry, Pauline Husband, Anette and Patrick Block, Donna and Toni Chin, Jean and Earl McCloud, and Sacha Wilson.

Josephine Fee Swint, a Rockaway resident for over 20 years, died February 9. She was 38.
Swint, a child care provider, was born on November 3, 1967 in Brooklyn.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Wells; and brother, Dennis Kellum.
Swint is survived by her daughter, Ranzeena Swint; son, Justin Swint; mother, Minnie Swint; granddaughter, Sarena Young; uncles, Junior Tarver and Jesse Tarver; sisters, Cynthia Tarver, Barba Swint, Melissa Patterson and Melissa Osbourne; brothers, her twin Joseph Swint and David Swint; sister-in-law, Dana Swint; brothers-in-law, Kevin Patterson and Anthony Stallings; childhood friends, Jennifer Dunkin and Donessa Parrish; and many relatives and friends.
