St. Francis CYO Boys Take Center Stage
The CYO Girls playoffs began this weekend but most of the St. Francis teams were off with first round byes. The Intermediates were the only team in action and advanced easily, 37-12, over St. Pancras. Allison Dunn returned to score 13. Caroline Clark added 10. Kathryn Edwards, Molly McNulty, and Jessica Iori rounded out the scoring. The Subnovice B’s played one of their best games of the season, beating St. Thomas More in the Gate of Heaven tournament. Emma Collins, Kim Sluyk, and Taylor Vegh led an aggressive defense, while Kayla Kilgallen and Serena Yanello supplied the firepower for the victory.
Sunday’s slate at St. Francis brought out a large crowd. The day began with an entertaining matchup between the Boys Subnovice A and B. The PeeWees followed and this time it was the B’s edging the A’s 16-12. The rest of the day featured matchups with St. Helen. Will McGuire sparked the Rookies, who pulled away in the second half for an easy win.
On Saturday they lost a spirited struggle with St. Thomas More, 24-19. The Intermediates rolled over St. Stan on Saturday and appeared to be on their way to a similar result against St. Helen as they led 33-11. The boys from Howard Beach woke up and made it a game but in the end SFDS prevailed. The day concluded with the highlight Novice game. Once again the two rivals battled tooth and nail and once again the depth of St. Francis wore down St. Helen.
The teams hope to face each other for the Diocesan championship in March.
