Irish Ropes Amateurs Fight in Golden Gloves

There’s a dream for most boxers that one day, after all the hard work and training will one day pay off with untold riches and world titles.

Before their dreams can be realized, boxers must start at the beginning and the Golden Gloves is the first opportunity to hit it big. The Irish Ropes Boxing Club, located on Beach 73 Street in Arverne, will feature eight amateur boxers who will compete in the 2006 Golden Gloves, which began last Wednesday.

One of the premier amateur boxing events in the world dating back to 1926, the Irish Ropes Boxing Club will have eight fighters competing in different weight classes.

Scheduled fights will take place mostly at police athletic league (PAL) centers around the city.

Super Heavyweight Novice: (201 pounds +) - Vinny Celetano. Heavyweight Novice (201 pounds and below)- Gary Styles and Luis Torres. Light Heavyweight Novice (178) – Sean Moynihan and Rasheem Flake. Junior Middleweight Novice (152)- Cordell Vasquez, Kevin Vargas. Light Welterweight Novice (141) – Darius Vinson, Harry Knee. Lightweight Novice (132) - Robert Rucker. Featherweight Novice (125) - Travis Hall.

Vinson will fight on January 31 at Freeport Rec Center and Cordell Vasquez and Harry Knee will fight on Feb 1. at South Jamaica PAL at 116-25 Guy Brewer Boulevard.
