St. Virgilius students were recently featured in Newsday for their generous donations to p o v e r t y s t r i c k e n Hurricane Katrina refugees that were uprooted to Texas.

The Broad Channel students became pen pals with the children after their teacher, Anne Murphy, visited her daughter (also a teacher) and her classroom in Houston, Texas. Murphy wanted to get her own St. Virgilius students involved in helping these underprivileged children, most of them evacuated to Texas from hurricane-ravaged areas and left with practically nothing. Students gave away gently used clothing, ten boxes worth, to their pen pals during the holidays, and created cardboard gingerbread men for their new Southern friends.

Their hard work is part of Newsday’s FutureCorps, a community service program with thousands of student participants from Queens and Long Island.
