Display Warns Against Drunk Driving

A wrecked car and a sign that warns against the dangers of drinking and driving sits at one of the most dangerous areas in the 101 Precinct – the corner of Beach 35 Street and Beach Channel Drive which turns and forks through Rockaway Freeway and onto Seagirt Boulevard. Lt. Gary Messina of the precinct’s special projects unit spearheaded the idea for the display, with the assistant of artist Geoff Rawling and the Rockaway Artists Alliance. “It could very well save lives,” said Detective Willie Olmeda, who told The Wave that the display – which was put up last month – would remain for a few more weeks. A similar display, with the help of the Far Rockaway High School Art Department, was put in the same area during the 2004 holiday season. Photo by Miriam Rosenberg
