Birders Brave Bitter Cold at Gateway Refuge

A group of 10 birders from the NYC Audubon Society joined Jamaica Bay Guardian, Don Riepe, for a hike along the trails of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on January 15th. Despite the cold and 35 mph winds they managed to find quite a few ducks bobbing in the frigid waters of the bay plus 2 overwintering catbirds and a sharp-shinned hawk in the upland woods. The next hike will be led by naturalist Mickey Cohen and is scheduled for this Saturday, January 22 at Fort Tilden at 10 a.m. Hopefully, Riepe says, the weather will be less forbidding.
