A Chilly Dip In The Ocean For The New Year

The Rockaway Polar Bears, nearly 200 strong, celebrated the New Year with their traditional noon dip in the chilly ocean at the

beachront and Beach 146 Street. At dip time, the ocean temperature was reportedly 46 degrees, while the air temperatuue stood at 37 degrees. The leader of the group, Chris Gallagher (in santa hat and pictured below with Niel (Cubby) O’Conner terned the

day “almost balmy.” The Beach 146 Street group was the largest of four Rockaway groups to dip that day.
