Author To Speak To St. Camillus Students

Robert W. Kurkela, author of “Lilies On The Moon,” a book of children’s poetry, will read poems to students on Friday, January 6, 2006 at 1 p.m. at St. Camillus School, 185 Beach 99 Street.

The assembly is part of the work that Kurkela is doing with the school. In addition to being an author, Kurkela owns a publishing company, Kidzpoetz Publishing, and with the help of St. Camillus teacher Eileen Mullarkey and Principal Sister Agnes White, is planning the creation of a soft-cover book, titled “Sand Scripts From The Seashore School.” The book of poetry will be filled with the works from all 190 St. Camillus students, grades K-8.

The production of the book is an interactive experience between St. Camillus and Kidzpoetz Publishing. The company provides free on-going support, lesson plans, materials and guidance, and Kurkela donates a portion of his company’s profits and time to charities and organizations.

Following the reading, Kurkela will answer questions from students, as they continue working on their poetry through the month of January in preparation for the book.
