Woman Leaps To Escape Two-Alarm Fire
Police and firefighters arrived at the home at 218 Beach 31 Street shortly after 10 a.m. and found Dawn Fyffe, 25, who had already made the frightful, lifesaving leap. She fell about 15-feet to the ground below. Firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes and immediately sounded a second alarm, calling in backup from local fire companies and as far away as Howard Beach. More than 30 firefighters waged a 45-minute battle to bring the flames under control. Representatives from the New York Red Cross also responded and helped find temporary shelter for Larry Hooks and Mildred Carrol, who also lived in the home and were displaced by the fire. Fyffe, whose birthday fell on the day after the fire, was brought to Jamaica Hospital by EMS.
A fire department spokesperson said the fire is under investigation Fyffe and the Brooklyn man who owns the home, Pierre Ronald, could not be contacted.
