1988, when he was consecrated as Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Long Island, he has served as Chairman and President of the EHS Board of Managers, and ensured that it has stayed true to its mission of providing quality health care to the sick and needy of the Rockaways and the Five Towns. The leadership and medical acumen of Dr. Markowitz has been a hallmark of the Department of Internal Medicine. Under the leadership of Dr. Raymond Villanueva, St. John’s has enjoyed many years of medical excellence in anesthesia and the operating rooms.
The Hospital, renamed St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, South Shore, became known as the “Miracle Hospital,” after raising $37 million in construction funds. In 1983 New York City Mayor Edward I. Koch presided over the dedication ceremony for the 11-story newly-constructed Tower Building.
