SJEH Honors Three At Annual Ball

St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, South Shore, will present three distinguished men with its Humanitarian Award at its upcoming 2005 Chrysanthemum Ball. The honorees are: The Right Reverend Orris G. Walker, Jr., the President and Chairman of the Hospital’s parent organization, Episcopal Health Services Inc.; Sheldon Markowitz, MD, Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and Raymond Villanueva, MD, Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology.

The Chrysanthemum Ball will also commemorate the Hospital’s Centennial. It will be held on Saturday, November 19, at the Sands at Atlantic Beach.

Bishop Walker has been a staunch advocate of the Hospital. Since

1988, when he was consecrated as Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Long Island, he has served as Chairman and President of the EHS Board of Managers, and ensured that it has stayed true to its mission of providing quality health care to the sick and needy of the Rockaways and the Five Towns.

The leadership and medical acumen of Dr. Markowitz has been a hallmark of the Department of Internal Medicine. Under the leadership of Dr. Raymond Villanueva, St. John’s has enjoyed many years of medical excellence in anesthesia and the operating rooms.

On June 25, 1905, the Sisters of St. Joseph founded St. Joseph’s Hospital, the first hospital established to serve the people of the Rockaways-Five Towns area. The mission of St. Joseph’s was to serve the sick and needy regardless of race, color or creed and to extend charity to those who need it, a worthy mission which continues to be upheld at St. John’s today. In 1976, Episcopal Health Services Inc. assumed responsibility for the Hospital as well as long-held community expectations that the institution be expanded and modernized.

The Hospital, renamed St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, South Shore, became known as the “Miracle Hospital,” after raising $37 million in construction funds. In 1983 New York City Mayor Edward I. Koch presided over the dedication ceremony for the 11-story newly-constructed Tower Building.
