USPS Fort Tilden Contract Station To Close
By Howard Schwach

A spokesperson for the United States Postal Service has confirmed a local rumor that the contract post office that has been in Fort Tilden for more than 30 years may soon close its doors for good.

Postal officials blame the closing on the National Park Service, which owns the building that houses the office.

“The NPS wants us to maintain the building, but we don’t do that with contract stations,” explained Scott Klein a local USPS spokesperson. “The building is beyond repair and they won’t maintain it, and neither will we.”

Klein added, however, that the postal service was looking for a new contract station in the Breezy Point shopping center.

He said that the USPS is ready to ink a contract for that new office.

A contract station is not a normal post office, but serves as a post office within a local business that is under contract with the USPS to provide postal services on a fee basis.

“Even though the Fort Tilden office will probably close, we will not leave the community in the lurch,” Klein added.
