Parks Department Once Again Dozes Dunes

The Department of Parks once again angered many local residents by grooming the beach nearby Beach 113 Street by bulldozing under a row of natural dunes growing nearby the boardwalk. Experts says that the dunes are necessary to protect the homes along the peninsula, but Parks continues to distinguish between “legal dunes,” which are created by the department and “illegal dunes,” which are made by nature. Pictured, bulldozer tracks mark the destroyed boardwalk dunes. Photos by Arthur Cholakis.
The fenced-in man-made dunes stand between the boardwalk and the ocean.. Many environmentalists argue that the natural dunes should be left in place. In many venues it is against the law to touch the dunes.
