Changes To Verizon Lifeline Telephones

State Senator Ada L. Smith announced that under a new federal rule, Verizon and other telephone companies must annually re-certify the eligibility of their lifeline customers.

Lifeline, which is a discounted home telephone service, is available to those eligible for Medicaid, food stamps, family assistance or other government benefit programs.

“The lifeline telephone service is a valuable program for low-income New Yorkers. It allows people to have guaranteed home phone service at a reasonable rate to ensure they will be able to make necessary phone calls in the event of an emergency,” Senator Smith said.

Verizon has been notifying current Lifeline customers with direct mailings, bill inserts, ads, and handouts, as well as through their website.

They request the completion of a form as well as the submission of proof of eligibility as soon as possible, to avoid being switched to regular service.

For more information, Lifeline customers may call toll free at (888) 617-0200.
