Norton Basin And Michaelis Park Cleanup

Pictured: Marianne Kleyla and Fred Toborg, members of the Norton Basin Edgemere Stewardship Group, record and bag more than 225 pounds of garbage during the 20th Coastal Cleanup.
On September 17, members of the Norton Basin Edgemere Stewardship Group, founded by Marlen Waaijer, worked with the Parks Department, the DEC and Jamaica Bay Guardian, Don Riepe, to restore the neglected section of Michaelis Bayswater Park in Bayswater, as part of the American Littoral Society-sponsored Coastal Cleanup.

Pictured: The youngest member of the Norton Basin Group, Marcell Gilliard, records bags of recyclable bottles and weeds that took up a total of 9 bags. “It is especially gratifying meeting young people who are willing to pitch in, who care about the neighborhood they live in,” said Marlen Waaijer, the group’s founder.
Pictured: Steve Cooper, the president of the Frank Avenue Civic Association, and Rosa Ruiz, one of its members, record the debris found in data sheets. All the data will be analyzed, and the information will help build better neighborhoods.
