Local Resident Returns From Sea Training

Midshipman Peter Belford of Breezy Point recently returned to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, where he is a student, after spending a number of months at sea training aboard U.S. merchant vessels.

Belford, the son of Chickie and the late Peter, sailed on U.S. merchant ships as part of the Academy’s required work-study program. Among the countries he visited were Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Greece and Spain. A graduate of Xaverian High School, Belford was nominated to attend the academy by Congressman Anthony Weiner.

All students at the Academy spend part of their sophomore and junior years at sea, gaining knowledge about the performance and operating characteristics of merchant vessels, becoming familiar with ocean trade routes of the world.
