for larger version       Gateway Greenway Coming To Wildlife Refuge
The asphalt path, part of the Rockaway Gateway Greenway project, will begin on the south side of the Joseph Addabbo Memorial Bridge and continue 1.5 miles along the west side of Cross Bay Boulevard to the northern end of Broad Channel, according to the NPS. The path is intended for pedestrians, bicyclists and inline skaters – motorized vehicles are prohibited. The $1.3 million project was first approved nearly a decade ago, according to Dave Avrin, Superintendent of the Staten Island Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. The price tag includes planning, construction, signage and fencing. The pathway will connect to existing parts of the greenway or on-street bike routes. “When fully completed, the Rockaway Gateway Greenway will link significant natural and cultural areas around Jamaica Bay and provide almost 20 miles of off-street, non-motorized transportation around Jamaica Bay through the Rockaway Peninsula and other parts of Queens and Brooklyn,” the NPS said in a statement. “Users of the Rockaway Gateway Greenway will enjoy different perspectives and unusual discoveries, including the diverse natural habitats of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge; the beaches, dunes, historic seacoast fortifications and the landmark boathouse of Jacob Riis Park and Fort Tilden; and New York City’s first municipal airport at Floyd Bennett Field,” the NPS said.
