for larger version       Pheffer: Opt Out of ‘Pre-approved Solicitations’ Assemblywoman Audrey I. Pheffer has informed New York consumers that they do not have to live with a mailbox cluttered with “pre-approved” offers for credit or insurance. Thanks to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, the public has the right to opt out of receiving future “pre-approved” or “prescreened” solicitations for credit or insurance, according to a release issued by Pheffer’s office. She says that consumers can reduce the amount of unwanted mail they receive by opting out of pre-approved offers and can reduce their risk of identity theft resulting from stolen mail. “This is an important opportunity for consumers to further protect themselves against identity theft as well as eliminating the nuisance of receiving this influx of junk mail,” said Pheffer. To exercise the right to opt out of pre-approved solicitations, residents should call 1-888-5OPTOUT or visit www.optoutprescreen.com/ . Consumers may choose to opt out for five years or permanently, and may opt back in at any time. The request must be processed within five days, but it may take up to sixty days before consumers stop receiving pre-approved offers, according to the Assemblywoman. Lastly, Pheffer says, consumers who choose to opt-out will no longer be included on certain pre-approved offer lists maintained by the major credit reporting companies, but may, however, continue to receive commercial mailings based on lists from other sources.
