Members of the Russell family were flown to the White House on Friday, September 9 to receive the 9/11 Medal of Valor in honor of Stephen P. Russell, a firefighter and local Rockaway resident who lost his life on September 11, 2001.

The ceremony took place at the White House on the South Lawn. Accepting the award for Stephen’s parents was his older brother, Clifford Russell. After the ceremony, First Lady Laura Bush stayed to meet and greet the family members. Laura Bush also accepted the book, “A Salute To Bravery,” from Christina Russell, Clifford’s wife, which was produced by her, Anne Marie Ruggiero and their 6th grade class in the aftermath of 9/11.
