for larger version       Note-Job Thief Strikes Local Bank
A thief got away with $650 in cash last week after holding up a bank in Arverne, police said. Officers from the 100 Precinct responded to the Bank of America branch located at 66-03 Beach Channel Drive at about 10 a.m. last Wednesday morning after a “robbery in progress” call went out over police radios. Upon their arrival, the bank’s teller manager told the officers a black male in his early 30s entered the bank and passed a note that said, “Give me your money. I have a gun.” A firearm was never actually displayed, police said. The manager told police she handed over $650 in $50 bills to the man, who was wearing a black jacket with red sleeves, a black baseball cap with a yellow letter “M” on it and white sneakers. The bandit then fled eastbound on Beach Channel Drive in a late model burgundy Nissan Maxima with a Florida license plate. The officers immediately transmitted a description of the suspect and his vehicle over police radios, which broadcast the information to officers in both precincts. Minutes later, the 101 Precinct’s Anti Crime Unit spotted a vehicle at the intersection of Mott Avenue and Beach Channel Drive that matched the description, and two men, age 58 and 35, were arrested, police said. Neither Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown’s office nor the U.S. Attorney’s Office had record of the arrest, however, which indicates the men were not charged and then released, sources said.
